Everyone loves a good celebrity romance, even the celebrities themselves. We love the romcom-like nature of their coupling and how they're always so glamorous on the red carpet. But the glitz shown in front of the camera is sometimes a far cry from how it plays out behind the scenes.
And it's often behind-the-scenes activities that lead to these relationships falling apart. We never really discover why these relationships come apart, but some do come apart for valid reasons. From the common irreconcilable differences to the less common conscious uncoupling, here are eight celebrity divorces we never saw coming.
Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise, Divorced In 2012 - Irreconcilable Differences
While everyone agreed that Tom Cruise and Katie Holmes were two of Hollywood's more beautiful people, some always believed their relationship was strange. They still maintained a relationship and even married in 2006. But things all changed when they had their daughter.
The child, named Suri, was the subject of much media scrutiny. But with Cruise belonging to the Church of Scientology, the child was also under the scrutiny of the church, and, at a young age, and wanted her involved. Katie was having none of it and decided to remove herself or the church and Cruise. Their divorce was finalized in 2012.
Chris Martin and Gwyneth Paltrow, Divorced In 2016 - Conscious Uncoupling
Everyone thought they were the perfect match. They even had a penchant for giving "unique" child names (their daughter's name is Apple). So when musician Chris Martin and actress Gwyneth Paltrow unceremoniously separated, it left everyone in shock, and the world reeled when they announced that they were no longer an Item.
They called it a conscious uncoupling, a term that has been around since the '40s but became an actual five-step process created by marriage and family therapist Katherine Woodward Thomas. The idea is to finish an intimate relationship consciously, making it as seamless and peaceful as possible.
Elin Nordegren and Tiger Woods, Divorced In 2010 - Infidelity
Elin Nordegren struck it lucky when she met Tiger Woods while working as a nanny for Jesper Parnevik. A budding model, her beauty must have been part of what attracted Woods to her, and by 2004 they were married. But five years and two children later, things started going pear-shaped.
In 2009, Woods admitted to infidelity, and Nordegren filed for divorce. By 2010 it was finalized, and she was $100 million richer. According to Raymond Hekmat, a prenuptial agreement is a contract between a couple that details what happens to assets and finances, particularly in divorce. This negates the rule of half set out by the community of property.
Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton, Divorced In 2015 - Irreconcilable Differences
A match made in country music heaven, Miranda Lambert and Blake Shelton were on the same upward trajectory in terms of career when they sang together at a Country Music Television concert event. But after Shelton divorced his first wife, he and Lambert started a relationship and soon married.
But the intensity of their careers took its toll, and soon there were rumors of infidelity by both of them. Those rumors were never confirmed 100%, but Shelton moved on almost instantly to his current wife, Gwen Stefani. Lambert meanwhile married Brendan McLoughlin, an NYPD officer.
Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, Divorced In 2015 - Infidelity
A match made in rock and roll heaven, Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale were making rock music popular in the '90s when they hooked up after touring together in 1998. They were married in 2002 and had three children together, but it suddenly all went sour in 2014.
There were stories about Rossdale's infidelity, and by 2015 they divorced. Stefani moved on with Blake Shelton, who she met while they worked together on the singing competition "The Voice." According to an article on "harrlawfirm.com," infidelity doesn't affect divorce proceedings as it has before. This is since irreconcilable differences became a thing, meaning no fault is needed for divorce.
Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston, Divorced In 2005 - Irreconcilable Differences
Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston were some of the hottest celebrity couples in Hollywood during the late '90s and early '00s. She was the big hot star from a popular sitcom, while he was, well, Brad Pitt. Their relationship moved quickly, and by 2000 they were married.
But after just five years, their marriage was over. Many believe that Pitt met Angelina Jolie on the "Mr. & Mrs. Smith" set and fell in love with her. Their reason for splitting was irreconcilable differences. According to lawyer Bryan Driscoll, in an article about the subject, this essentially means that they're divorcing despite it being no one's fault.
Johnny Depp and Amber Heard, Divorced In 2017 - Abuse
Like all good celebrity relationships, Johnny Depp and Amber Heard met on the movie set in 2011. This was on the film they worked on called "The Rum Diaries." But just because the relationship was good didn't mean it would last, especially when Johnny Depp is involved.
They got married in 2015, but just a year later, Heard filed for divorce. She also got a restraining order citing verbal and physical abuse. While it's not the same in all states, according to attorney Melissa Heinig, abuse can affect divorce proceedings regarding how they move forward, how assets are split, and getting restraining orders.
Kim Kardashian and Kanye West, Divorced In 2022 - Irreconcilable Differences
In one of the strangest celebrity relationships, Kim Kardashian and Kanye West started dating in 2012 after claiming that they were nothing more than friends. They also started dating while Kim was legally married to Kris Humphries, who she had filed for divorce from just 31 days after they were married.
The West/Kardashian connection thrived for years and produced four children. But in 2021 Kim filed for divorce, citing irreconcilable differences. Kanye opposed the divorce, which according to Divorcestatistics.info, can delay the divorce by over a year. But after Kardashian requested for the court to fast-track the process, the divorce was finalized on March 2, 2022.
