When you start a company that intends to sell a product, you have to focus on many things such as the product description, its specifications, the marketing strategy, and most importantly, the name. The name of a product is going to be the most crucial aspect of the marketing strategy because it helps you create an identity for it.
So, when it comes to it, your job is to choose a name that would be the right fit.
However, sometimes companies happen to miss that mark and end up going a completely different way in terms of naming their product, a strategy that ends up backfiring.
Don’t believe it? Here are some of the products that have the weirdest names ever.
1. Nad’s – Hair Removal Cream
This Australian brand focuses on providing hair removal products such as Nad’s wax strips or Nad’s Hair removal cream. Given the fact that this brand is quite big in Australia, it’s safe to say that their bad name hasn’t held them back. Launched in 1992, Nad’s has become one of the leading brands for hair removal but the problem doesn’t lie in their service, but rather in their name. Nad’s is a slang word for a male private part in the nether regions and so naming your product after it it just doesn’t feel like a classy or conventional way to go.
2. TrekStor iBeat Blaxx
Apart from being a tongue twister, this product is on this list for a different reason. Launched in the early 2000s, the German company TrekStor launched an mp3 player called iBeat Blaxx. The blatant mockery and prejudice against a minority did not get a positive reception and led to unrest amongst consumers. It wasn’t long before people started calling the manufacturer out over their poor judgment. When it was all said and done, the company acknowledged their mistake, apologized for it, and promptly changed the product name but sadly, the damage had already been done.
3. Reebok Incubus
Reebok is a well-known athletic footwear brand so when they have a product with a bad name, it’s international news. In 1996, the company launched footwear that was geared exclusively for women and named it the Reebok Incubus. Incubus is a male demon that seeks to copulate with women who are sleeping, so maybe naming a female-oriented product after such an entity might not be the best choice after all.
Yikes, that was embarrassing!
All it takes is one mistake to get canceled in the modern world of PC culture so companies better watch out!
