1. Big Trains for Small Tracks
In 2014, France’s National rail company SNCF decided to order 2000 brand new trains for the rails of the state but what happened next will probably have you either laughing out loud or feeling sorry for those overseeing the project. Once the trains arrived, they were perfect for the country's urban railways but in rural France, the platforms were too narrow for the new trains. Alas, this mistake could have been completely avoided if SNCF had done their homework over the dimensions of railways across France.
2. Snapple for Sale
Snapple was a beverage brand that quickly rose to the top and continued to rule the market segment as one of the leading companies in the world of drinks and beverages because of which it also attracted many investors looking to buy the company out. This included a company named Quaker Oats which reportedly shelled out a whopping $1.7billion on a deal with Snapple but just 3 years after this expensive transaction, Snapple was sold off for a fraction of the original sale price at only $300 million.
3. Star Wars
No one knew that Star Wars was going to be one of the biggest franchises in the world of entertainment, especially in the mid-70s. But during its production run, it was an expensive project that almost bankrupt filmmaker George Lucas. However, when 20th Century Fox made a film deal with Lucas, they didn’t consider was the lucrative potential of the franchise’s royalties for merchandise sales. Decades later, George Lucas created a massive multi-million-dollar fortune off of the deal due to negligence on the part of 20th Century Fox. Ouch.
Mistakes are meant to be made but admittedly, there are some mistakes that will go down in history as some of the most expensive errors ever.
